There is a cool section of the trail here where you pass under some train tracks that follow along Cold Creek. This area, known as Horseshoe Bend because of the bend in the train tracks, can be quite scenic, especially if you enjoy train spotting!

The Cold Stream Road to South Shore Drive loop offers a dynamic touring cycling experience, blending varied terrain with stunning Sierra scenery. You'll start on Coldstream Road, which alternates between pavement and dirt, providing expansive views of the Sierra Crest and passing several ponds. The route then transitions to the smoother, paved South Shore Drive, where you'll enjoy cruising past sandy beaches and lakefront homes along Donner Lake, all set against a backdrop of mountain peaks like Schallenberger Ridge. This 11.0-mile (17.7 km) moderate loop with 1113 feet (339 metres) of elevation gain takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes, making it a rewarding ride for those who enjoy a mix of surfaces.

When planning your visit, consider that Coldstream Road is best suited for gravel or mountain bikes due to its mixed surface, while South Shore Drive is more amenable to traditional touring bicycles. The loop offers year-round recreational opportunities, but checking local conditions is always a good idea. This route is a fantastic way to explore the area, providing access to the backcountry and showcasing the beauty of the glaciated Coldstream Valley.

Beyond the diverse cycling terrain, this loop is notable for its rich historical significance, tracing through an area steeped in the history of the Donner Party and the transcontinental railroad. It also serves as a gateway to Donner Memorial State Park, offering a unique blend of natural beauty and historical context. The varied experience within a single loop makes it a standout option for touring cyclists in the Tahoe National Forest.
