Prepare for a difficult road cycling challenge on Onion Valley Road, a route known for its relentless gradients and rewarding vistas. This demanding climb covers 26.2 miles (42.1 km) and gains 5232 feet (1595 metres) of elevation, typically taking around 3 hours and 2 minutes to complete. As you ascend, you will experience constantly changing views of the Owens Valley and the dramatic Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains, with numerous switchbacks offering expansive vistas. Higher up, you might even spot distant peaks like Mount Whitney, making the effort worthwhile.

Before you head out, remember that the road is typically open from May to November, but this depends heavily on snow conditions, so always check local reports. There are no provisions available along the route, so you will need to carry all your water and snacks for the entire ride. Be aware that summer temperatures in the lower sections can exceed 100°F, and crosswinds can be strong on the descent, so plan your timing carefully.

This route is notable for how the varied elevation brings distinct changes in vegetation and temperature, making each section of the climb unique. It offers a true test of endurance for racebike enthusiasts while providing an immersive experience in the rugged beauty of the Inyo National Forest. The dramatic landscape and the sense of accomplishment make this a memorable ride for those seeking a significant challenge.
