Embark on the Monte Cuzzer Loop Trail, a difficult hike that challenges you with 3555 feet (1083 metres) of elevation gain over 9.3 miles (14.9 km). This demanding route takes approximately 6 hours and 23 minutes to complete, guiding you through dense beech and pine forests. You will encounter beautiful waterfalls and an adventurous crossing of the Rio Nero ravine, equipped with metal cables and wooden walkways, before reaching the panoramic summit of Monte Cuzzer for expansive 360-degree views.
This difficult hike requires very good fitness, alpine experience, and sure-footedness. Make sure you wear sturdy shoes for the varied terrain. It is best to avoid this trail during or after heavy rain, as conditions can become slippery on the loose gravel and steep slopes. You can conveniently start your adventure from San Giorgio di Resia, where parking is available.
The Monte Cuzzer Loop Trail is nestled within the wild beauty of the Julian Pre-Alps, part of the Parco Naturale Regionale delle Prealpi Giulie. From the summit, you can identify peaks like Amariana, Sernio, Montasio, and Canin. Along the way, you will also find the Casera Rio Nero, an unattended shelter surrounded by fir and beech forests, offering a peaceful resting spot with views of the high Julian Pre-Alps.
