Embark on the Summit Trail and Danny On Trail Loop for a challenging hike that rewards your effort with expansive views. This difficult route spans 11.7 miles (18.9 km) and involves a significant elevation gain of 2237 feet (682 metres), typically taking around 5 hours and 50 minutes to complete. As you ascend, you will navigate through peaceful evergreen forests and open ski trails, with switchbacks easing your climb towards the summit. From the Big Mountain Summit, you are treated to sweeping 360-degree alpine vistas, showcasing the Whitefish Range and the majestic peaks of Glacier National Park.

Planning your visit offers flexibility; you can choose to hike the entire loop, or opt for a scenic chairlift ride either up or down to reduce the overall distance. Conveniently, parking, restrooms, shops, and restaurants are available at both the base and the summit of the mountain. Consider starting early to make the most of your day and enjoy the facilities before or after your hike.

Beyond the physical challenge, this trail offers a chance to connect with the natural environment and local amenities. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, such as birds and deer, as you traverse the path. If you visit in late summer, you might even discover huckleberries along the way. Additionally, the Summit House at the top hosts the Forest Service's award-winning Environmental Education Center, providing an interesting stop to learn more about the area.
