We are pleased to open most of our tree farm to the public for responsible, non-motorized recreation. Over the past three generations, the Ueland family has benefited from numerous private landowners in the Puget Sound region allowing us to cross their property for a hike, bike ride, horseback ride, or to reach a ‘put in’ or ‘take out’ on a river canoe or kayak trip. Our quality of life in the Pacific Northwest is enhanced when private property remains open to the public, and we are fortunate our legislators in Olympia have had the foresight to encourage private property owners to keep their lands open through the protections offered under RCW 4.24.210.

The Chico Trail and South Loop offers a fantastic journey through the rugged, volcanic landscapes of Upper Bidwell Park, where you'll find a mix of oak woodlands and grasslands. This route is particularly known for its stunning panoramic views of the Big Chico Creek Canyon, and on clear days, you can even see the distant coast ranges. Keep an eye out for Dickerson Falls, a beautiful highlight along the way, as you navigate the varied terrain.

This moderate 4.7-mile (7.5 km) hike involves 458 feet (140 metres) of elevation gain and typically takes around 2 hours and 4 minutes to complete. While generally accessible, some sections can be steep and rocky, so good footwear is a must. Much of the trail is unshaded, so plan to carry plenty of water, especially during warmer months. Parking is available, including access to Peregrine Point from Highway 32 for those looking for a quicker view.

What makes this trail stand out is its unique geological backdrop, with formations like Chico Formation sandstone and Lovejoy Basalt rocks telling a story of ancient volcanic activity. The area is also rich in diverse ecosystems, from riparian zones along Dickerson Creek to rocky ridges, and in spring, it bursts with wildflowers. It's a popular multi-use trail, so you'll share the path with mountain bikers, making it a vibrant spot for outdoor enthusiasts.
