Count Adolf von Altena built Blankenstein Castle in 1227 to secure the Ruhr valley. The main altar of the castle chapel was dedicated to John the Baptist. In the subsequent period, the town of Blankenstein emerged. The parish church for the citizens was St. Georg in Hattingen.
