    Hiking

Pass the fabulously scenic meadow, and descend the bluff to a cliff-edge viewpoint of Hart's Cove and Chitwood Creek's waterfall. Sea lions can be heard but not seen, hidden by a promontory. Marvel at the beautiful waterfall cascades into the surging ocean!

The Hart's Cove Trail plunges you from a lush, dim old-growth rainforest into expansive coastal meadows, offering a dramatic shift in scenery. You'll navigate switchbacks and creek crossings before emerging to breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and Chitwood Falls cascading into the secluded Hart's Cove. This moderate 5.3-mile (8.6 km) out-and-back hike involves a significant 1207 feet (368 metres) of elevation gain, making the return climb a good workout.

Be aware of seasonal closures; the trail is typically closed from January 1 to July 15 to protect sensitive wildlife. Always check for potential road closures, like Forest Road 1861, which can affect access to the trailhead. Parking is available, but arriving early is recommended, especially during the best time to hike in late summer and fall.

Hart's Cove is nestled within the UNESCO-designated Cascade Head Biosphere Reserve, highlighting its ecological importance. Keep an ear out for barking sea lions and an eye peeled for various bird species, including peregrine falcons and bald eagles. The vibrant turquoise waters of the cove and the chance to spot whales add to the unique appeal of this Oregon Coast gem.
