    Hiking

The trail up Jay mountain begins gradually and becomes steeper and more rocky just before the first overlook. The trail follows the ridgeline past Blueberry Lookout and Grassy Notch until it reaches the summit. The ridgeline trail is marked by cairns and sports stunning views all around.

    Jay Mountain Trail

The Jay Mountain Trail offers a rewarding moderate hike, covering 3.9 miles (6.3 km) with a significant elevation gain of 2191 feet (668 metres). You can expect to complete this route in about 3 hours and 1 minute. The trail starts with a gentle ascent through mixed forests, where you might spot old stone walls, before opening up onto an exposed, rocky ridgeline. This section, often called the 'Highway in the Sky', provides continuous panoramic views of the Adirondack High Peaks, Lake Champlain, and Whiteface Mountain, with many hikers finding the best vistas from various overlooks and the false summit.

To access the trail, you will find parking available at the Jay Mountain Trailhead. While this trail is generally less crowded than some other Adirondack High Peaks routes, it is still wise to plan your visit, especially if you intend to hike during winter. If you are heading out in colder months, make sure to bring appropriate gear like snowshoes and microspikes, as the conditions are not suitable for cross-country skiing. Always check local conditions before you go.

What makes this trail stand out is its distinctive open ridgeline, which provides expansive views that are not common on many other Adirondack trails. This unique feature allows for an uninterrupted visual experience across the landscape. You will find that the most memorable views are often from the various overlooks along the ridge, rather than solely from the true summit, giving you plenty of opportunities to pause and take in the scenery.
