    Hiking

With a few different way to approach the feature, Shamokin Falls is the most popular attribute on the Wintergreen Resort property. The Upper Falls Trail is by far the most commonly used trail for accessing the falls, but all the approaches have their advantages. The falls are gorgeous year round, but make sure to not climb on the rocks around the falls since the rocks get slick (and icy).

Embark on an easy hike through the Shamokin Springs Nature Preserve, leading you to the beautiful Shamokin Falls. This 3.5-mile (5.6 km) route involves a climb of 833 feet (254 metres) and typically takes about 1 hour and 48 minutes to complete. As you hike, you will pass through a unique hardwood forest, encountering diverse tree species and braided streams. Keep an eye out for large greenstone boulders, some forming natural bridges over the water. The cascading falls are a highlight, especially after a good rain.

For this hike, good hiking footwear is highly recommended, as the trail can be rocky and wet in places. You will find bog boards installed in frequently damp sections to help with navigation. Be aware that during winter months, ice on the rocks can make the route particularly slippery, so plan your visit carefully if hiking in colder weather.

This trail offers a journey through a relict ecosystem, a hardwood forest that has persisted since the last ice advance. Beyond the falls, you can observe various ferns and wildflowers that thrive in this distinct environment. The route provides a chance to experience one of the Shamokin Springs Nature Preserve's notable natural features.

Embark on the Upper Shamokin Falls Loop, an easy 2.1-mile (3.4 km) hike that guides you through varied forest types, including mountain laurel thickets and oak hickory woods. You will gain 661 feet (201 metres) in elevation over an estimated 1 hour and 11 minutes, making it a rewarding experience without being overly strenuous. The highlight of this route is the series of cascading Upper Shamokin Falls, which you can explore from multiple viewpoints. As you hike, streams flow alongside the path, adding to the tranquil atmosphere. Expect some rocky and occasionally steep sections, even though the overall difficulty is easy.

Before you set out, remember that while the trail is rated easy, some sections can be rocky and steep, so wear appropriate footwear. After rainfall, the path might be muddy, and during winter, ice can make parts of the trail slippery, requiring extra care. Leashed dogs are welcome to join you on this scenic hike, allowing your furry friend to enjoy the natural surroundings with you.

This trail offers a rewarding experience for those looking to explore the Blue Ridge Mountains. As you hike, keep an eye out for evergreen ferns and wildflowers, which are particularly vibrant in spring and fall, enhancing the natural beauty of the route. The diverse forest types you encounter, from mountain laurel to oak hickory, showcase the rich ecosystem of the region.

Embark on the Upper Shamokin Falls and Morgans Loop Trail, an easy hike that guides you along a stream to the beautiful cascading Shamokin Falls. This short route, just 0.8 miles (1.3 km) long, winds through diverse forest types, including mountain laurel thickets and oak-hickory trees. You will gain 235 feet (72 metres) in elevation, and the entire loop takes approximately 26 minutes to complete. As you explore, look for evergreen ferns and wildflowers, and notice the interesting rock formations along Morgans Loop, which offers a different view of the falls. Be ready for some rocky and potentially wet terrain, particularly close to the waterfall.

The Upper Shamokin Falls and Morgans Loop Trail is conveniently located near Wintergreen Resort, making it an accessible option for a quick outdoor escape. While the route is rated easy, be aware that it does include some steep and rocky sections, especially with an uphill climb on the return. We recommend wearing slip-resistant footwear to navigate these parts safely. If you plan to visit in winter, exercise extra caution as rocks can become slippery and icy.

This trail offers a refreshing contrast to more crowded paths in the Blue Ridge Parkway area, providing a more tranquil hiking experience. The diverse forest, from mountain laurel to oak-hickory trees, creates a varied landscape throughout your journey. The highlight remains the impressive Shamokin Falls, a natural landmark that makes this short loop a rewarding outdoor adventure.
