The Empire State Trail forks in two directions here.

The trail that goes west changes to compacted gravel paths, so it is not ideal for a road bike.

The trail that goes north is paved and mostly follows roads to the Canadian border.

This Empire State Trail Peebles Island loop offers a delightful road cycling experience, weaving through varied landscapes along the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers. You'll glide along dedicated off-road paths, often paved or on stable stonedust, interspersed with short on-road sections. The route provides picturesque views of the waterways and historic landmarks, especially as you approach and explore Peebles Island State Park, a natural gem where the Mohawk meets the Hudson.

Planning your ride, you should know that while much of the route is flat and accessible, there's a challenging 2-mile on-road stretch between Watervliet and Green Island that requires comfort with vehicle traffic. The trail is rated moderate, covering 45.1 miles (72.5 km) with 1391 feet (424 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 3 hours and 9 minutes. Parking is available at Peebles Island State Park, making it a convenient hub for your cycling adventure.

This segment of the Empire State Trail is steeped in history, following the paths of former canals and railroads, offering a direct connection to New York's industrial past. Peebles Island itself is a significant point, located at the confluence of the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers, near the start of the Erie Canal. The Champlain Canalway Trail portion also showcases abandoned stone canal locks, providing a unique glimpse into the region's rich heritage and natural features.
