During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) it was a Muslim cemetery for combatants of North African origin. His remains were later transferred to the San Amaro Cemetery, where a plaque commemorating him can still be seen. In 1957 the bodies were repatriated. Today, its walls are adorned with texts referring to the city, in Latin, Greek, Arabic, Gaelic and Old Castilian. That is why we now call it House of Words.
