    Hiking

The Black Creek National Recreation Trail is a roughly 39-mile long trail in southern Mississippi. With over 100 bridges and boardwalks existing on the trail, you can expect to pass through a variety of bayou, swampy, and boggy environments. There are backcountry campsites and a few established recreation areas along the way.

The section of trail that travels through the Black Creek Wilderness is an especially wild section of trail; the more primitive feeling of the trail adds to the adventure of being on a national footpath. Knowledge of Leave No Trace principles is extra important when entering wilderness areas.

Embark on the Black Creek National Recreation Trail, a challenging 28.0 miles (45.0 km) hike that winds through Mississippi's unique blackwater creek ecosystem. You will gain 1014 feet (309 metres) in elevation, requiring an estimated 11 hours and 43 minutes to complete. As you traverse the route, you'll encounter diverse Southern Mississippi landscapes, often paralleling the distinctive Black Creek with its inviting white sandbars.

To make the most of your visit, consider hiking between October and April, when the weather is cooler, sunnier, and insects are less prevalent. The trail is open year-round, offering opportunities for primitive camping along the route, especially on the sandbars. This makes it an excellent choice for those planning multi-day backpacking adventures.

The Black Creek National Recreation Trail offers a deep immersion into the region's natural beauty, showcasing piney woods with longleaf and loblolly pines, alongside hardwood floodplains featuring sweet gum, oak, and bald cypress. Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as beavers and blue herons. This difficult route is perfect for experienced hikers seeking a true wilderness experience.
