    Hiking

A small sign marks the actual pass here, and there is a small parking area with just enough room for a few cars. Just on the other side of the gravel road you'll find a trailhead for the family-friendly hike up to April Bowl, which in a normal year contains three small lakes. If you're feeling rugged, you can also hike up a rocky ridgeline to the obvious summit of Hatch Peak, which looms over the bowl.

This route typically takes about 1 hour and 4 minutes to complete. You will begin with switchbacks that lead into the scenic April Bowl, where you can discover two or three beautiful blue or turquoise lakes nestled in the tundra. As you continue towards Hatch Peak, the path becomes rockier, offering expansive 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains, including the Talkeetna and Chugach Ranges.

Planning your visit is straightforward, as parking is generally available at the Hatcher Pass (April Bowl Trailhead). The typical hiking season for this trail runs from June through September, so aim for those months for the best conditions. While the April Bowl section is considered family-friendly, be aware that the climb to Hatch Peak involves a significant grade and can be challenging, even though the overall difficulty is rated as easy.

Much of this hike takes you above the treeline, providing continuous vistas once you are on the ridge. This unique feature allows for uninterrupted panoramic views throughout a significant portion of your journey. The trail offers a rewarding outdoor experience for its length, making it a notable option within the Summit Lake State Recreation Site for those seeking impressive mountain scenery without an overly long commitment.
