    Hiking

The road to the trailhead is rugged and washed out and requires high clearance or all terrain vehicles to traverse.

The hike up Mount Breitenbach is scree the whole way. You should pack crampons to be safe and be mindful that you may need to traverse around avalanche sites. It is better to take the saddle than the bowl to the top of the ridge. You will find beautiful views from the summit.

Embark on the Mount Breitenbach Trail for a challenging hike through Idaho's Lost River Range. This difficult route covers 7.0 miles (11.3 km) and involves a significant elevation gain of 4277 feet (1304 metres). You can expect diverse scenery as you ascend, passing a small waterfall and navigating rough, steep terrain with thick underbrush and creek crossings. The climb to Mount Breitenbach, Idaho's fifth highest peak, offers expansive views. From the summit, you will see panoramic vistas of the Lost River Range, including Mount Borah and the Pioneer Mountains, along with Mackay Reservoir.

Plan for a full day; this hike typically takes around 5 hours and 30 minutes to complete. Be prepared for the rough and steep conditions, especially the loose scree sections, and consider bringing good boots with ankle support and trekking poles. Accessing the trailhead often requires a high-clearance vehicle due to rough roads. Always check current conditions before you go, as snow can linger into summer and stream beds may have high water flow during spring melt.

Beyond the physical challenge, the trail offers unique natural features. Keep an eye out for fossils embedded in the rock during a scramble section. The area is also home to wildlife; bighorn sheep are frequently spotted near the top of Mount Breitenbach. This route provides a deep immersion into the rugged beauty of the Lost River Range, making it a notable adventure for experienced hikers.
