The Crystal Springs and Dean Trail Loop offers a delightful journey through the serene second-growth redwood forests of Huddart Park. You'll follow single-track paths through cool, shaded gulches, crossing seasonal creeks on wooden bridges, with sunlight filtering through the canopy of towering redwoods and Douglas firs. Keep an eye out for deer and various bird species, and in spring, the forest floor comes alive with wildflowers like Fetid Adder's Tongue and redwood sorrel.
This moderate hike covers 4.7 miles (7.6 km) with 887 feet (270 metres) of elevation gain, typically completed in about 2 hours and 17 minutes. The trail is well-maintained with clear signage, though a map is recommended due to many intersections. It's accessible year-round, but spring offers vibrant wildflowers, and the shaded sections provide a welcome escape from summer heat. Note that dogs are not permitted on this trail.
Huddart Park, where the Crystal Springs and Dean Trail Loop is located, has a rich history, with its land donated for public use by lumberman James Huddart. The redwoods you see today are second-growth, having regrown after the original ancient trees were logged in the mid-1800s to build San Francisco. This trail provides a peaceful immersion in this regenerated forest, offering occasional viewpoints of the San Francisco Bay and Mount Diablo.
