There are a number of different waterfalls within Ohiopyle State Park. That being said, Ohiopyle Falls is the most visited cascade in the park since it is so close to the Visitor Center. There is a really big wooden viewing deck just below the falls.

The Great Gorge and Ferncliff Trail Loop offers a delightful and accessible journey through Ohiopyle State Park, showcasing the region's natural splendor. You'll wander through lush hemlock forests, discover the ecological richness of the Ferncliff Peninsula, and enjoy stunning vistas of the Youghiogheny River Gorge. The trail's highlight is undoubtedly Cucumber Falls, a prominent 30-foot waterfall that adds a touch of magic to your hike.

This easy 3.3-mile (5.3 km) loop, with a modest 159 feet (48 metres) of elevation gain, can be completed in about 1 hour and 24 minutes, making it ideal for a leisurely outing. While the Great Gorge and Ferncliff Trail Loop hiking difficulty is low, be prepared for some rocky and rooty sections, especially on the Ferncliff Trail, which can get muddy after rain. Dogs are welcome on a leash, and ample parking is usually available within Ohiopyle State Park, though early arrival is recommended during peak times.

Beyond its scenic beauty, the trail boasts historical significance, following an old tramway once used for coal transport. The Ferncliff Peninsula itself is a Registered Natural Landmark, home to diverse plant life and even ancient fossils. You'll traverse diverse landscapes, from the gentle grades of the Great Allegheny Passage, crossing the impressive bridge over the Youghiogheny River, to the winding, sometimes steep, forest trails of the Kentuck system, where you can discover Cucumber Falls, Sugar Run Falls, and Jonathan Runs Falls. This moderate 8.8-mile (14.2 km) loop, with 828 feet (252 metres) of elevation gain, takes approximately 3 hours and 56 minutes, making it a rewarding journey for those who enjoy varied terrain and stunning natural features.

Planning your visit is straightforward, as Ohiopyle State Park offers convenient parking, though early arrival is recommended during busy periods. No permits are required for this hike. Spring and fall are particularly scenic times to explore, with vibrant wildflowers or colorful foliage enhancing the experience.

This loop is a fantastic way to experience the contrasting environments of the region, showcasing both the engineering marvel of the Great Allegheny Passage and the wild beauty of Ohiopyle State Park's forests and waterfalls. This easy 1.9-mile (3.0 km) hiking loop near Ohiopyle offers a delightful journey through a mature hemlock forest, leading you to the captivating Cucumber Falls. You'll experience a gentle 138 feet (42 metres) of elevation gain, making it a quick adventure that takes about 49 minutes. The main draw is the 30 to 36-foot bridal-veil waterfall, where you can uniquely walk behind the curtain of water, offering a memorable perspective.

Planning your visit is straightforward, with parking available in Ohiopyle, though it's wise to arrive early during busy times. Keep in mind that the falls are most spectacular after rainfall, but the trail can be prone to flooding if the Youghiogheny River is experiencing high water. Descending to the base of the falls involves a steep and rocky path, so good footwear is recommended.

Beyond the falls, the area where Cucumber Run meets the Youghiogheny River features natural swimming ponds, shielded by rocks, perfect for a cool down on a warm day. The trail also passes through old-growth timber, including chestnut, oak, and beech trees, and is a fantastic spot for birding, especially in the spring when wildflowers add to the picturesque setting.
