The monastery was founded by Benedictine monks. The earliest written record dates back to 1152, when Pope Eugene II placed St. Johann under his protection. The monastery owned estates in the Toggenburg region and the Rhine Valley: St. Johann, Stein, Krummenau, Kappel, St. Peterzell, and Mogelsberg, near Feldkirch, Klaus, Götzis, and Altach. It experienced its heyday in the 14th century.
