The young country is struggling to establish a creation history in the face of massive protest from historic Macedonia in Greece. Still, the FYROM (Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia) went through some awful times worth being remembered.

The museum is dedicated to the Macedonian struggle for sovereignty from the beginning of the resistance movement against Ottoman rule to the declaration of independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. It houses 13 permanent exhibitions. One of the most important exhibits is a copy of the Declaration of Independence signed in 1991.
