The Pony Pasture and Wetlands Loop offers a refreshing escape into nature right in Richmond, Virginia. This easy 2.2-mile (3.5 km) hike guides you through a varied landscape, from the scenic banks of the James River, where you can explore unique rock formations, to the tranquil wetlands. Keep an eye out for waterfowl and other birds near Half Moon Beach and the shallow pond in the wetlands section; it's a fantastic spot for wildlife observation. With only 17 feet (5 metres) of elevation gain, you can comfortably complete this loop in about 53 minutes, making it ideal for a leisurely stroll.

Planning your visit is straightforward, but be aware that Pony Pasture is a beloved local gem, especially popular on weekends. Parking can fill up quickly, so an early start is highly recommended to avoid crowds. The trail primarily features dirt and gravel paths, though certain areas, particularly the Pleasants Creek Trail, can become quite muddy after rainfall, so choose your footwear accordingly. This accessible route is perfect for families and those seeking a gentle outdoor experience.

Historically, this area was used for grazing horses and ponies before 1970, and its preservation from development highlights its natural value within the James River Park System. Beyond its historical charm, the loop is notable for its excellent river access, allowing visitors to wade into the James River or observe Class II rapids. The wetlands, with their meadow and swamp forest, are a haven for birdwatchers, offering sightings of everything from ospreys to bald eagles, making it a truly unique natural feature in the urban landscape.
