The Church of Madonna di Campagna is located in Verbania in an area that is now part of the hamlet of Pallanza, but which was an isolated area at the time, close to the original centers of Pallanza and Suna.

In the 13th century, it was the seat of a chapel called Santa Maria de Agro, which housed a fresco dedicated to the Madonna del Latte that attracted many pilgrims. Near the chapel, near the San Bernardino River, which then made a big bend and flowed much closer to the church than it does now, was also a hospital for the poor and sick. The area was isolated, located out of town along the road that led to a ford in the San Bernardino River several miles upstream.
