The Merchants' Bank of Canada was a major financial institution, and its headquarters at 355 Saint-Jacques Street in Montreal was a landmark. In 1922, the Merchants' Bank of Canada merged with the Bank of Montreal. Later, the magnificent building also housed the luxury hotel Le St-James; it closed in 2022.

The building was built between 1870 and 1873 by the architectural firm Hopkins and Wily for the Handelsbank. After several changes of ownership, it is now a hotel and apartments.
