The Sierra de Hornachuelos – circular route to the Mirador del Santuario de los Ángeles invites you to a deep immersion in one of Europe's best-preserved Mediterranean forests. This hiking trail weaves a tapestry of holm oaks, cork oaks, and gall oaks, following the winding Bembézar River through canyons and willow forests. The highlight is the Mirador del Santuario de los Ángeles, offering spectacular views that make every one of the 15.6 kilometers of this moderate hike worthwhile. It's an experience that connects you with the pristine nature of the Sierra Morena.
For this 4-hour and 20-minute hike, with an elevation gain of 287 meters, the best time to visit is in autumn or spring, when the weather is milder. The trail combines unpaved tracks with narrower sections, and although it is of moderate difficulty, it requires a good level of physical fitness. It's important to know that some sections near the viewpoint may be restricted due to private property, so pay attention to signage.
This route is not only a feast for the senses but also immerses you in the rich biodiversity of the Sierra de Hornachuelos Natural Park, part of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. You'll be able to admire the native flora and, with luck, spot some of the protected species that inhabit the area, such as the black vulture. Furthermore, the trail has a historical background, connecting the town of Hornachuelos with the old Franciscan convent, which adds a cultural layer to your adventure.
