Hiking

The first two hours are spent walking along the beautiful and deserted levada. Inexplicably, the last 90 minutes lead almost exclusively along a busy road, and you're constantly in fear for your life. Who comes up with something like that? Surely there's a better way to do it. As it is, I definitely can't recommend it.

The Portela village path leads you along an old connecting route between houses, terraced fields, and small gardens. Step by step, the view opens up to the surrounding mountain ridges, the Porto da Cruz gorge, and the green landscape of the eastern island. The mostly paved path is ideal for a leisurely hike and offers a glimpse into traditional Madeiran rural life.
