Historically, it was also known as Habernstein or Hühnerstein. The etymology of the name is unclear. It could refer to the Hünerberg (Chicken Hill), but a derivation from Hauberg is also conceivable. Hauberg referred to a coppice of oak trees, which was cut down every 20 years to obtain bark for tanning and firewood.
