The chapel has existed since the Middle Ages and was part of the parish of Geijsteren. The place of worship was maintained by the Guild of St George and St Anthony Abbot van Maashees, founded in 1473. During the Reformation the chapel came into Protestant ownership, but in 1800 the Catholics got the building back.
The fate of the chapel was sealed almost immediately: in 1819 the construction of a new parish church began.
