Calvaria is the Latin translation of the Aramaic Golgotha (skull site), the name of the place of execution of Christ. Emperor Constantine the Great had various religious buildings built there. The visit to Golgotha was associated with indulgences. This is the reason why imitations of the Calvary have been built since the late Middle Ages.
The Calvary of Achenkirch was built from 1800 to 1804 and supplemented by a holy staircase in 1858.
