Until 1789 there were two churches in Rheinbach. Once the parish church of St. Martin outside the city walls, which was destroyed by lightning in 1789, and a small branch church dedicated to the Virgin Mary and St. George, which stood on the site of the present church.
The parish church of St. Martin was first mentioned in a document in 943. At least since 1323 the problem arose that one had to leave the protective city walls in order to attend the service.
