Rock has probably been mined manually in the Hartkoppe quarry since the end of the 19th century and on an industrial scale from the 1950s to around 2018 - mainly rhyolite, but very rare minerals have also been found here.
From a vantage point above the crater you have a beautiful view and can find out more about the area on an information board. There are also guided tours from time to time.
