The history of this war memorial – unlike most others of its kind – goes back further than the two world wars that shook Europe in the first half of the 20th century. This memorial commemorates the victims of the 1870/71 war against the then "arch enemy" France. The victory of the armed forces of the North German Confederation (led by Prussia), with the participation of the South German states, led directly to the founding of the then German Empire under Wilhelm I.
