The church houses a valuable icon of the Virgin Mary, covered in silver, which is said to date back to 848 AD. Parts of the temple, such as the carved wooden base, come from the older 16th-century Chrysopigi church, which was once located in the nearby castle.
The building shows distinct Venetian influences, typical for the Ionian Islands. Inside, the white and gold altar, as well as colorful frescoes, are impressive.
