Blessed Adolph Kolping (1813–1865) was a Catholic priest and is known as the "Father of Journeymen." Before his studies and ordination, he had himself been a journeyman shoemaker and was familiar with the hardships of itinerant (and therefore homeless) journeymen. As a chaplain in Elberfeld (now a district of Wuppertal), he became acquainted with a "Young Men's Association" founded by teacher Johann Gregor Breuer, recognized its potential, and transferred to Cologne. From there, he founded the "Catholic Journeymen's Associations," the precursors of today's Kolping Families.
