The IHES was founded in 1958 by Léon Motchane, a businessman and mathematician.
Alexander Grothendieck and the revolutionary ideas of his school dominated the 1960s at the IHES. The legendary Séminaire de géométrie algébrique du Bois Marie took place there. René Thom researched catastrophe theory there.
Outstanding mathematicians who have worked permanently at the IHES: Alexander Grothendieck, David Ruelle, Jean Bourgain, Alain Connes, Pierre Deligne, René Thom, Mikhail Leonidowitsch Gromow, Laurent Lafforgue and Maxim Lwowitsch Konzewitsch.
