    Hiking

This part of the route is quite dangerous if one doesn’t know how to walk carefully through a landslide area without causing more landslides. Traverse at your own risk. The official panels at the Santa Maria Maddalena refuge redirect you to the lake Calamone through another (longer) route, keep this in mind.

Embark on a difficult 6.9-mile (11.1 km) hike through the Tuscan-Emilian Apennine National Park, gaining 1920 feet (585 metres) of elevation over approximately 4 hours. You will traverse varied terrain, from wide gravel forest paths through ancient beech and conifer woods to steeper, exposed sections near Monte Ventasso. The trail's highlight is Lago Calamone, a stunning glacial lake surrounded by ancient trees and rare botanical species, offering beautiful reflections of the surrounding forests.

This route requires good physical fitness, sure-footedness, and sturdy mountain footwear, with some sections demanding alpine experience. While the initial path to Lago Calamone is easier and suitable for all ages, the full circuit to Santa Maria Maddalena and Monte Ventasso includes challenging, steep, and exposed climbs. Be prepared for potentially muddy areas, especially around the lake, and consider options to shorten the route if you prefer a less strenuous outing.

The trail is notable for its unique natural features, including Lago Calamone, the largest natural lake in the province of Reggio Emilia, home to a rare orchid species. From the summit of Monte Ventasso, you can enjoy comprehensive 360-degree panoramic views of the Apennine ridge. Part of the route also follows the ancient
