Along the Via Porticata the merchants with their caravans stopped, taverns were opened and trade was done.

It was a daily scenography, in the Middle Ages, when every day the merchants who traveled the route of the Via Mercatorum passed under the arcades of Averara.

This was a mandatory step for all those who were headed towards Valtellina.

    Hiking

The Via Porticata confirms the importance of this borderland. It is located right at the entrance to the town and is identified in the historic village by the length of the buildings that make it up, all with three floors that rise from a high base with ten large arcades.

These have remained in a perfect state of conservation, with the large wooden beams, the cobbled pavement and the two stone lanes for the passage of the wagons.

This characteristic street, overlooked by fifteenth-century buildings, is located in the Fontana district, once the center of the administrative life of the town, the place of residence of the Venetian vicar and of the most important families.

Averara was the capital of the municipality of the same name which included, in addition to the towns of Cusio and Santa Brigida, also the towns of Olmo, Mezzoldo, Cassiglio and Ornica.

This explains why the houses and the road structure were of a higher level than the other neighboring countries.
