Two of the names used can each have different meanings. According to hydrological designation, the "Obertrave" is the upper reaches from the source to the mouth of the Elbe-Lübeck Canal. From a legal perspective, "Obertrave" refers to the section from St. Jürgen Harbor of the Canal Trave to the Holsten Bridge at the Holsten Gate. The "Untertrave" begins, according to traditional designation, at the Holsten Bridge, according to the city map at the Teerhof Island, and according to the signature of the State Survey Office as coastal waters at the Herreninsel.[2]
