Amazing views of Mt. Diablo to the east and Scarpers Peak and Santa Cruz mountains to the southeast. On a clear day, the Farallon Islands are visible beyond the coastline. Mt. Tamalpais is also visible to the north, looming above the San Francisco skyscrapers.

Embark on the Montara Mountain North Peak Loop, a moderate hike that takes you through diverse landscapes, from coastal scrub to vibrant wildflower meadows. This route covers 8.9 miles (14.3 km) and involves a significant elevation gain of 2126 feet (648 metres), typically taking around 4 hours and 37 minutes to complete. As you ascend, you'll enjoy continuous views of the Pacific coast, culminating in sweeping 360-degree panoramas from the North Peak summit. On clear days, you can spot the Pacific Ocean, the San Francisco skyline, and even the Golden Gate Bridge from the Pacific to SF Bay Panorama viewpoint.

When planning your hike, aim to arrive early, especially on pleasant days, as parking lots near the trailhead can fill up quickly. Be aware that sections of the Montara Mountain Trail within San Pedro Valley County Park do not permit dogs, so it's wise to confirm specific regulations for your planned route. Since much of the trail is exposed, remember to bring layers and carry plenty of water to stay comfortable.

This loop offers a unique opportunity to experience the natural beauty of McNee Ranch State Park. The varied terrain and elevation changes provide a good workout while rewarding you with expansive coastal vistas. It's a great option if you are looking for a challenging yet accessible escape with impressive views of the surrounding Bay Area.

The Montara Mountain and North Peak Loop offers a dynamic hiking experience, transitioning from shaded Blue Gum Eucalyptus forests to open coastal scrub and unique Manzanita groves. You'll navigate challenging switchbacks and steep, gravelly sections, especially on the Alta Vista Trail, before reaching exposed ridges. The reward for your effort is truly spectacular, with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean, Montara State Beach, and even the distant Farallon Islands on a clear day.

This moderate 6.7-mile (10.9 km) hike involves a significant 1600 feet (488 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking about 3 hours and 28 minutes. Parking is available at various trailheads, including Grey Whale Cove or San Pedro Valley Park. Starting early is advisable, especially on warm days, to secure a spot and enjoy the cooler coastal air before the afternoon sun hits the exposed upper sections.

Beyond the stunning vistas, the Montara Mountain and North Peak Loop is notable for its unique natural features, including impressive granite rock formations and the rare Montara Manzanita, which grows only on this mountain. The diverse ecosystems also provide excellent opportunities for wildlife spotting, particularly for birdwatchers hoping to see hawks, kestrels, and peregrine falcons. This route is a fantastic way to experience the rich biodiversity and dramatic coastal scenery of the San Mateo County area.
