The Köhlerhütte (charcoal burner's hut) found here refers the visitor to an ancient, today – almost – extinct craft, but it was once a decisive factor in the industrialization of entire regions: The blast furnaces of the iron and steel industry, for example, relied on charcoal to reach the operating temperature necessary for smelting ore. As a consequence, entire regions were once completely deforested by charcoal burning, and it is only thanks to later afforestation that forests have re-emerged and nature can be seen.
