However, the relationship between the Nattenhauser and the authorities rarely seems to have been free of tension. In the 18th century, there were such disputes with the learned and art-loving Abbot Georg Lienhart of Roggenburg that he only referred to his subjects as the "arch ruffians" and exchanged Nattenhausen for the town of Wallenhausen when the opportunity arose.
