The ancient "Calchere" were used to obtain lime and placed where there were some favorable conditions: proximity to stony ground (not all stones are good!), Groundwater debris or stream bed; abundance of frascame; good access road, possibility of having a wire near the calchera for transporting the bundles.

The calchera consisted of a circular vat chamber, generally with a diameter of 3-5 ml. 3-4 ml. height, with the firebox opening downstream and loading of the material from above. The discharge took place from the same mouth downstream.
