Monte Poieto was founded in 1959 primarily as a ski resort, the brainchild of renowned Selvino skier Mario Grigis, who, attending the 1957 Intersky World Congress in Aspen, had a look at the great American ski resorts.
After the refuge was built, the "Cantul - Monte Poieto" cable car was built, along with two surface lifts and a high-altitude chairlift.
In the 1970s, Monte Poieto became a well-known and renowned ski resort, hosting numerous international ski competitions, with champions such as Thoeni and Gros.

Hiking
The old ones, little more than a basket or, more properly, a bin in the strictest sense of the word, can now be found around Aviatico and Selvino, used as decorative items, flowerpots, ski racks, or other items.
