A bridge, probably wooden, must have existed in Roman times at the same point where the Ponte delle Navi would later be built. It was necessary to allow a quicker connection from the other bank of the river to the Via Postumia via a sort of city bypass, thus reducing traffic that would otherwise have to flow into the city.
