The cable-stayed bridge is located at river kilometer 1886.20 and is the only Danube bridge between Vienna and Bratislava. The bridge is 1872 meters long, of which 366 meters are the actual river crossing. The A-shaped steel pylon that supports the stay cables is 76.33 meters high and is placed over a power pylon. It was built by the steel construction company Waagner-Biro from October 1969 to the end of 1972 and officially opened in January 1973. It was not named after the former governor Andreas Maurer until 2012.

Die Andreas-Maurer-Brücke in Petronell-Carnuntum ist nach dem ehemaligen niederösterreichischen Landeshauptmann Andreas Maurer (1919–2010) benannt, der von 1966 bis 1981 an der Spitze des Bundeslandes stand. Die Brücke dient als Verkehrsverbindung und erinnert mit ihrem Namen an eine prägende Persönlichkeit der niederösterreichischen Landespolitik. Für Wanderer ist sie zugleich ein Orientierungspunkt auf dem Weg durch die geschichtsträchtige Umgebung von Carnuntum.
