The gardens are part of an area that was gradually created on the site of the demolished city walls and the filled-in moat from the beginning of the 19th century. Mayor Martin Kopecký had the city walls removed and, in their place, created orchards in a wide green belt around the old town. Today, these gardens are known as Pětatřicátníků-, Smetana-, Kopecký-, Šafaříkova-, Křižíkova-, and 5.- května-Park.
