    Hiking

Very natural trail along Coal Creek. It goes up and down and sometimes the ground is a bit muddy. But it is a very nice hiking trail.

Embark on a moderate hike along the Lower Coal Creek Trail, a 4.9-mile (7.9 km) route that winds through lush forested areas. You will gain 659 feet (201 metres) in elevation over an estimated 2 hours and 15 minutes. As you hike, you will be surrounded by towering Douglas fir, western red cedar, and bigleaf maple trees. The trail often follows the gentle flow of Coal Creek, offering the peaceful sound of water and chances to spot local wildlife like deer. Be sure to look for the scenic Coal Creek Falls and North Fork Falls, which are highlights of the journey.

This trail is generally accessible and suitable for hikers with moderate experience. It is a welcoming option for families and is also dog-friendly, making it a great outing for everyone. You will find parking typically available near the trailhead, which makes starting your adventure convenient. Consider visiting during the cooler parts of the day for a more comfortable experience, especially in warmer months. The path is well-maintained, providing a pleasant surface for your hike.

Beyond its natural beauty, the Lower Coal Creek Trail offers a glimpse into the region's rich history. As you explore, you will encounter remnants of the area's coal mining past, including a sealed mine shaft. This blend of natural landscapes and historical intrigue makes the route a popular choice within the Coal Creek Natural Area. It provides a unique opportunity to connect with both the environment and the industrial heritage of the locale.
