An isolated upland in the east of Lancashire; the long, sweeping plateau of Pendle Hill has enthralled walkers for generations. Hikes to Pendle Hill are invigorating, across atmospheric moorland drenched in intriguing history and boasting the sort of views that are the envy of most English counties.

The hill will forever be associated with the supernatural; it is a popular objective on Halloween. A Bronze Age burial site was discovered on the summit and the whole region holds a special fascination for the superstitious. Most infamously of all, it was the site of the Pendle Witch Trials of 1612, which led to the execution of ten unfortunate souls who were found guilty of witchcraft.

Bewitching views from Lancashire’s most famous summit

On a clear day, distant Blackpool Tower and even the fells of Lakeland can be seen as you stride out along the plateau. Patchwork farmland and the quaint villages at its base give way to the urban spread of Burnley and Blackburn to the south, whilst the Forest of Bowland’s hills dominate the view northwest.

Such is its popularity, there are myriad walking routes to Pendle Hill’s summit escarpment. Approaches from the west ascend gradually, perfect for the whole family and not in the slightest bit technical. Plenty of other easy but more strenuous paths tackle the hill’s sheer, east-facing aspect. It drops steeply to the village of Barley and the Ogden and Black Moss reservoirs. Here quaint tea rooms, cafes and accommodation can be sought.

There are a number of other villages in which to find lodging and sustenance, whilst the town of Burnley is within easy driving distance.

    Hiking

An outlier of the fells of the main Forest of Bowland AONB, Pendle Hill is a superb standalone peak. At 1,827 feet (532 m), it's high enough to feel big and offers excellent views north into the Forest of Bowland and in other directions over the more populated areas of Lancashire.

Pendle is intertwined with myth and legend from jumping giants to the famous Witch Trials of the early 17th century.

You will experience a challenging ascent, gaining 1113 feet (339 metres) in elevation, and be rewarded with expansive views of the Lancashire countryside from the summit trig point. The trail offers a mix of charming village lanes and open moorland, passing by the picturesque Lower Ogden Reservoir, and typically takes around 2 hours and 41 minutes to complete.

To begin your hike, head to Barley village, which serves as the usual starting point for this route.
