    Hiking

Water cascades over this basalt cliff in the middle of old, vibrant forest. Close to park and other trails, University Falls is one of Tillamook's most easily accessible waterfalls and particularly impressive. Surrounded by lush greenery, the water falls around 55 foot (17 m), and is most spectacular after rainfall. The shoulder seasons are best, as summer can bring dry conditions.

Embark on an easy hike along the University Falls Trail, a brief yet immersive journey through a vibrant, green forest. You will find yourself surrounded by lush ferns and dense foliage as you make your way to the main attraction. The highlight is the impressive 55-foot cascade of University Falls, which plunges over a basalt cliff, framed by red alder trees. This route covers just 0.3 miles (0.5 km) with a gentle elevation gain of 17 feet (5 metres), making it a quick outdoor escape that takes only about 9 minutes to complete.

When planning your visit, be aware that while the path to the falls is generally easy, the trail can become muddy, especially after rain, and you might encounter tree roots. Sturdy shoes are recommended to ensure a comfortable experience. The area at the base of the falls is perfect for a quick stop to admire the scenery, though it does not offer extensive space for prolonged relaxation.

As you hike, keep an eye out for scorched stumps, which serve as a poignant reminder of the historic Tillamook fire, adding a layer of history to the natural beauty. You might also spot various wildflowers, such as Anemone, along the way. Elliott Creek runs alongside parts of the trail, contributing to the picturesque setting and the tranquil atmosphere of this unique forest environment.
