The Cathedral of Santa Maria delle Colonne (Saint Mary of the Columns) is the main church of the Sicilian city of Syracuse. From the 7th century, under Bishop Zosimus, the conversion to a church, initially in the Byzantine style, was promoted (source: Wikipedia).

On the occasion of the local patronage – the church is dedicated to the “Nativity of Mary” – I would like to offer those who linger a short reflection from Saint John of Damascus (born 675/676, died before 754) for spiritual contemplation: “The day of the birth of the Mother of God is a day of universal joy, for through the Mother of God, the entire human race was renewed and the suffering of the first mother, Eve, was transformed into joy.”
