Embark on the Tour of the Gherdenacia desert - loop tour, a challenging hike through the Puez-Odle Nature Park in the Italian Dolomites. This difficult 8.8-mile (14.2 km) route takes approximately 6 hours and 48 minutes to complete, involving a significant elevation gain of 3278 feet (999 metres). You will traverse a desolate karst landscape with rocky paths and unique formations, offering spectacular panoramic views of the Fanes mountains, Vallelunga Valley, and even Seiser Alm. The wild, rocky terrain and sparse vegetation create a distinct, desert-like impression, with some mountains shaped like giant anthills.
Planning your visit requires good fitness and sturdy shoes, as some sections are highly technical. The Gherdenacia plateau is generally considered moderate, but this specific loop is rated as difficult and demands alpine experience. You can often use chairlifts, such as the Gardenaccia chairlift from La Villa, to reach starting points for trails in the area, making the initial ascent more manageable. Look for teal paint and numbered trail markers to guide your way through the route.
This trail explores the Gherdenacia alpine plateau, a notable part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Puez-Odle Nature Park, recognized for its geological significance. Along the way, you will encounter Rifugio Gardenacia, known as one of the most serene huts in the region, and Rifugio Puez, which offers fantastic views as you approach it. The dramatic scenery and unique geological features make this loop a distinctive experience within the Dolomites.
