The pregnant house. Why are the walls bulging?
The bulging shape of the house wall is caused by moisture absorption.
When houses were built from brick starting in the 12th century, the people of Lüneburg used
the gypsum and anhydrite from the Kalkberg (lime hill) as a substitute for lime mortar. When humidity from the interior, rainwater, or groundwater penetrates the masonry, a chemical process begins
within the brickwork.
