The rhododendrons bloom April-May, then this gorge is fantastic. Tip: Concrete blocks are picturesquely scattered among the bushes, remnants of a bunker system like everywhere in the green belt. Fortifications have become rock gardens, a brilliant idea in peacetime.
2025: Bushes, perennials and ferns were removed from the south slope of the gorge. Why? The bare earth is really bleak.
2026: Camellias are being planted instead of old rhododendrons. Perhaps also because of the increasing dryness.

The "gorge" is far less spectacular than one might assume from its name; it is the remains of a ditch that was once part of the city's fortifications. It is part of the forest botanical garden in the Cologne district of Rodenkirchen. The main attraction of this section can be admired when the rhododendrons are in bloom.
